High Lifter
and Erlandson Performance (EPI) Created the Honda "Outlaw
Clutch Kit" for ATVs. This is the only primary clutch
enhancement kit on the market for Honda ATVs. Many people
mistakenly believe that a Clutch Kit can only help automatic
transmission. However, manual transmission ATVs also have
clutches that engage at a preset rpm. That is how an ATV
can sit still in gear, at idle, and begin moving only when
throttle is added. |
Honda ATVs in particular are noted for almost immediate throttle
response. The problem with immediate engagement in the mud is that
the motor is too far down in the power band to turn large mud tires.
This causes the engine to really struggle when going very slow or
starting off in deep mud.The Outlaw Clutch Kit delays engagement
by about 500 rpms. At that point, the engine is developing about
25% more power. This makes it much easier to spin big tires at low
speeds or from a stop. Once the clutch is engaged, it operates the
same as before. This delay is barely noticeable, but makes a big
performance difference in the mud.
Installation of the kit requires removing the front engine cover,
removing and replacing the primary clutch springs and replacing
the front cover gasket material. Installation takes about 2.5 hours.
The kit also comes with great instructions and a replacement gasket
(if used by Honda). The replacement gasket is higher quality than
the OEM gasket. If no gasket is required, the kit includes the proper
sealer, which is a solvent less product specially formulated for
sealing aluminum surfaces.
This kit should not be confused with stronger secondary clutch springs
that are often furnished with high performance engine rebuild kits.
Those are aimed at preventing the secondary clutch from slipping
in high performance motors.This is a relatively inexpensive modification
that contributes significantly to the ability of the Honda 4x4’s
to spin big aggressive mud tires in deep mud at slow speeds. It
was developed in a collaborative effort between the High Lifter
technical staff and the clutching specialists of EPI.
